Amazon has completed its landmark $50 billion investment in OpenAI, fulfilling a commitment initially announced in February 2026. The investment was deployed in phases, with $15 billion released in the first quarter of 2026, $13.7 billion in the second quarter, and the remaining $21.3 billion subsequently. This phased approach, disclosed in an SEC filing on July 1, 2026, signals a strategic repositioning of Amazon towards AI infrastructure.

This substantial financial commitment is part of a broader multi-year strategic partnership between Amazon and OpenAI aimed at accelerating AI innovation for various users. The partnership also includes an expansion of their existing agreement, with OpenAI committing to consume approximately 2 gigawatts of Trainium capacity through Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure. This expansion alone adds $100 billion over eight years to their previous $38 billion multi-year agreement.

The investment and expanded partnership underscore Amazon's deep commitment to the artificial intelligence sector, going beyond a mere financial stake. It positions Amazon as a crucial enabler of OpenAI's advanced workloads and reflects a strategic effort to lower costs and improve efficiency in producing AI at scale. Amazon's wholly-owned subsidiary, Amazon.com NV Investment Holdings LLC, was the entity responsible for the purchases of OpenAI’s Series C Preferred Stock, with Amazon.com, Inc. guaranteeing the obligations.
