In-house legal departments are embracing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to revolutionize their operations, moving beyond traditional methods to streamline various legal processes. This adoption is driven by the desire to increase efficiency, cut costs, and provide more effective legal support within their organizations. The integration of AI tools is transforming how legal work is conducted, from handling routine tasks to assisting in complex case management.

One significant area of AI application is in contract management. For instance, the UK engineering consultancy Hoare Lea has projected that its AI-powered Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) software will reduce the contract review team's costs by approximately one-third annually over a five-year period. This demonstrates the tangible financial benefits and efficiency gains that AI can bring to labor-intensive legal functions. The promising feedback from corporate legal departments indicates a growing trend towards using AI for tasks that require extensive document review and analysis.

AI is also being deployed to combat financial crime and assist in legal aid. DBS Bank, Singapore's largest bank, implemented AI tools within its legal and compliance team to proactively identify and prevent online scams. These tools utilize AI to predict fraud attempts and conduct pre-transaction checks on suspicious payments, leading to significant improvements in fraud detection. Similarly, PwC Singapore developed bespoke AI tools for Pro Bono SG, a legal aid charity, including a retrieval-augmented chatbot and a generative AI assistant, which produced substantial time savings during pilot programs and are set to be fully implemented by June 2026. These examples highlight AI's versatility in addressing diverse legal challenges.
