ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, is reportedly set to significantly increase its investment in artificial intelligence, with plans to spend $23 billion (RMB 160 billion) in capital expenditure by 2026. This figure marks an increase from the $20.7 billion (RMB 150 billion) invested in 2025. A substantial portion of this upcoming expenditure, more than 50%, will be allocated to acquiring advanced semiconductors, crucial for developing sophisticated AI models and applications.
This aggressive spending strategy is aimed at strengthening ByteDance's position in the global AI landscape and enabling it to keep pace with its US competitors. The company is already recognized as a leader in AI within China, operating Doubao, the country's most popular chatbot, which processed over 30 trillion tokens daily in September 2025 and boasts 157 million monthly active users. This AI prowess is seen as a key factor in its resilience, even amidst potential challenges like a forced sale of TikTok's US operations.
The investment highlights the high stakes in the AI sector and ByteDance's commitment to building out its AI infrastructure. This move places it in direct competition with major social media and tech companies like Meta Platforms, Pinterest, Reddit, and Snap, which are also heavily investing in AI. The scale of this investment underscores the company's ambition to be a dominant force in AI, not just in consumer applications but also in enterprise adoptions.
