Koch Inc. is reportedly considering the sale of Edged, its co-founded data center developer, in a transaction that could surpass $15 billion. According to a Bloomberg report, the company has engaged Goldman Sachs Group Inc. to assess interest from potential acquirers, and several offers have already been received. Discussions are ongoing, but no definitive agreement has been reached yet.
Edged was established by Koch alongside entrepreneur Jakob Carnemark with the goal of developing, constructing, and operating data centers featuring water-free cooling systems. The company currently manages seven data centers, including a substantial 169-megawatt facility in Atlanta, and has additional projects under development. The booming demand for computing power and capacity from major technology companies is driving a global surge in data center construction.
This trend has also attracted significant investment from large institutional investors. For instance, BlackRock Inc. has partnered with Meta Platforms Inc. on a 1-gigawatt data center project in Texas, which is projected to cost around $14 billion to develop. KKR & Co. has raised over $10 billion to establish a company focused on designing, building, and operating artificial intelligence infrastructure. Additionally, Blackstone Inc. filed for an initial public offering for a new data center acquisition vehicle earlier this year, highlighting the sector's attractiveness.
