Netflix is releasing a three-part docuseries titled "The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare" on July 29. The series aims to re-focus attention on the victims—Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin—who were tragically stabbed to death in their off-campus Moscow, Idaho, home on November 13, 2022. Director Skye Borgman emphasized her intent to create a tribute, prioritizing the victims' lives and the love surrounding them over a typical true crime spectacle.
The documentary will chronicle the crime and its aftermath, including the weekslong manhunt for the killer. Bryan Kohberger, then a 28-year-old criminology PhD student at Washington State University, was arrested on December 30, 2022. He has since pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary, receiving four consecutive life sentences plus 10 years for burglary. The series will feature unprecedented access to police footage and archival materials, alongside firsthand accounts from the victims' families.
Key to Kohberger's capture was DNA found on a knife sheath left at the crime scene, which was linked to him through genetic genealogy databases and his phone records. Investigators also identified his white Hyundai Elantra near the crime scene. Kohberger pleaded guilty on June 30, 2025, and spoke publicly in court for the first time on July 2, 2025, answering "yes" to having killed each victim and "guilty" to the charges. Victims' families addressed Kohberger during his sentencing on July 23, 2025.
