BlackRock is significantly ramping up its private markets division, spending approximately $27 billion on its latest three acquisitions to gain a stronger foothold in the sector. These acquisitions include Global Infrastructure Partners for infrastructure, HPS Investment Partners for credit, and Preqin for data. This strategic push comes as CEO Larry Fink observes accelerating institutional demand for private credit, even as retail investors show signs of apprehension.

This aggressive expansion contrasts with BlackRock's rivals, who have spent considerably less on private market acquisitions. For instance, T. Rowe Price acquired Oak Hill Advisors for $4.2 billion, and Franklin Templeton paid $3.5 billion for Lexington Partners and Alcentra. BlackRock's substantial outlay highlights its ambition to compete directly with private market giants like Blackstone and Apollo.

Despite this strategic investment, BlackRock, along with KKR and Apollo, is currently addressing issues within some of its struggling private credit funds. For example, BlackRock TCP Capital Corp., a $1.5 billion fund, has faced significant markdowns, including a 19% cut in net asset value in January and another 5% drop recently. These funds, while small percentages of the firms' total assets, present reputational risks due to their public trading and retail investor exposure. BlackRock has responded by integrating HPS executives into TCP's investment committee to improve performance.

Simultaneously, the private credit market is experiencing broader turbulence, with other major players like Blue Owl Capital and Blackstone also facing a wave of withdrawals. Analysts are warning of potential increases in default rates, especially if AI disrupts corporate sectors. Private equity managers are resorting to expensive debt to generate returns, indicating a challenging environment across the private markets. This makes BlackRock's aggressive investment a calculated move amidst market uncertainties and concerns over loan quality and concentrated exposures.
