Koch Industries is reportedly evaluating a sale of its data center business, Edged, which could fetch approximately $15 billion. This move comes as the demand for data center capacity, especially for AI-related computing, is surging, leading to significant M&A activity within the sector. Earlier this year, KKR was also reported to be considering the sale of CoolIT Systems, a data center cooling company, for potentially over $3 billion, highlighting the intense interest and valuation in this market.
The potential divestment by Koch follows a period of notable growth and investment in the data center industry. Companies are racing to build out infrastructure to support high-powered AI and cloud servers, which require substantial power and cooling. The deal is seen as a strategic play by Koch to capitalize on the high valuations currently placed on data center assets.
Analyst David Forgash from Pimco noted a rapid expansion in the high-yield debt market for data centers, which has grown from zero a year ago to about 4% of the market today, with expectations of reaching 10% within the next two years. This indicates a robust and rapidly financing ecosystem supporting the sector's expansion, though Forgash also cautioned investors to be careful about the diverging performance of companies in this space. Meanwhile, Qualcomm projects its data center chip sales to reach over $15 billion annually by fiscal 2029, and its non-handset businesses to hit $40 billion in total revenue by the same year, including $10 billion from automotive chips, underscoring the broader tech giants' bullish outlook on data center-related revenues.
Koch Industries, a diversified private company, has recently emphasized its "Principle Based Management" framework and the use of AI-supported platforms to aid decision-making, which aim to enhance organizational discipline and risk management across its diverse business units. While these initiatives are focused on internal operational improvements and leadership, a potential sale of a significant asset like Edged would represent a major financial transaction for the company, aligning with other market players seeking to optimize portfolios in the high-growth data center segment.
