BYD will introduce its new electric kei car, the Racco, in Japan on July 28, 2026, marking a strategic entry into a segment traditionally dominated by Japanese automakers. The Racco is designed to meet strict kei car size regulations, featuring compact dimensions (3,395 mm long, 1,475 mm wide, 1,800 mm high, with a 2,520 mm wheelbase) and right-hand drive to suit local driving habits and infrastructure. Its introduction aims to strengthen BYD's presence in one of the world's most competitive automotive markets.
The Racco will be offered with multiple range options; the entry-level model is expected to provide an estimated range of 200 km, while higher trims will offer around 300 km. One source also indicates a 180 km range with a 20 kWh LFP battery, designed for urban commuting, and another suggests a 320 km range. The car is equipped with DC fast charging up to 100 kW. A key feature for the segment is its sliding side doors, a practical upgrade usually found in larger vehicles, along with advanced driver-assistance systems.
Pricing for the BYD Racco is anticipated to be between ¥2 million and ¥2.5 million. This aggressive pricing strategy positions it competitively against domestic rivals like the Nissan Sakura (starting at approximately ¥1.87 million after incentives) and the Honda N-ONE e: (around ¥2.12 million). BYD's Japan representative, Atsuki Tofukuji, expressed confidence in the Racco's value proposition without heavily relying on subsidies.
BYD aims for ambitious sales, targeting 10,000 orders by the end of 2026. This goal represents a significant increase from the 3,870 units BYD sold in Japan last year. The entry of the Racco is expected to create new competition in the kei car segment, potentially disrupting market leaders like the Honda N-Box, which currently lacks an electric variant but is anticipated to launch one by 2027. Suzuki is also reportedly preparing a competitor.
The Racco's launch is seen as a crucial test for BYD's deeper strategic expansion in Japan, moving beyond its previous offerings in compact SUV and compact car segments.
