Big Tech companies, especially those in the burgeoning AI sector, are substantially increasing their lobbying efforts in Washington. In the first three months of 2026 alone, 11 major tech firms, including giants like Alphabet, Microsoft, Anthropic, and OpenAI, collectively spent $20 million on lobbying. This translates to an average daily expenditure of $226,000 during this 90-day period. This reflects a growing trend of these companies seeking to influence policy and gain access in the capital.
Specific companies show dramatic increases in their lobbying spending. Anthropic, for instance, more than quadrupled its congressional lobbying, spending $1.56 million in Q1 2026 compared to $360,000 in the same quarter of the previous year. Similarly, OpenAI almost doubled its expenditures, rising from $560,000 to $1.02 million. Meta, a non-AI-focused tech giant, led overall spending among the "Magnificent 7" with $5.99 million in Q2 2026, despite a 15% decline from Q1, while Google and Microsoft saw increases of 25% and 13% respectively.
These extensive lobbying efforts are highlighted by the sheer number of personnel involved. In Q1 2026, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, Anthropic, and OpenAI collectively employed 307 lobbyists, equivalent to one lobbyist for every two members of Congress. Alphabet and Meta alone accounted for 88 and 86 lobbyists, respectively, meaning one lobbyist for every six members of Congress. Issue One's director of money in politics reform, Michael Beckel, noted that this substantial investment is a way for companies to "buy access and influence in Washington" and ensure their perspectives are heard.
