Levon Helm Studios, known for the Midnight Ramble concerts, is embroiled in a public dispute after Amy Helm, Levon Helm's daughter, was removed from her management position on May 26. Longtime shareholder Brian Parillo, backed by Levon's widow Sandra Helm and another shareholder Barbara O'Brien, claims Amy's removal was due to alleged mismanagement and a lack of transparency regarding the company's financial records over the past decade. Parillo now controls 60% of the voting rights, though Amy and Sandra each still retain 40% ownership of the company.
Amy Helm, in turn, has accused Parillo of "financial exploitation and elder abuse," filing a request in Ulster County Surrogate's Court for a guardian to be appointed for her stepmother, Sandra. Amy suggests Sandra was manipulated into supporting Parillo. Sandra, however, denies these claims and states her support for Parillo, citing concerns that the studio wasn't booking enough shows and that the booked acts strayed from its original rock & roll character. The dispute escalated to a physical confrontation on May 28, leading to a police report, though no charges were filed.
The shake-up has resulted in the postponement of several Helm Family Midnight Ramble shows, a series critical to the studio's operations, originally started by Levon Helm in 2004 to prevent foreclosure. The general manager, operations manager, and studio manager have all resigned in solidarity with Amy. Parillo has expressed intent to continue booking shows and to investigate how the studio was managed under Amy, stating that a preliminary investigation has been sent to Amy as part of a settlement offer.
Parillo has emphasized that no one is "above being held to the legal, ethical and moral standards of running a company for the benefit of all of its stakeholders," criticizing Amy for making the dispute public. He stated, "If she can’t have it, then no one can." Amy, meanwhile, has stated she and the long-time staff are no longer part of Levon Helm Studios and have no involvement in current decisions, focusing on protecting The Barn's legacy and community.
