Former QPR co-owner Amit Bhatia is leading an investment consortium, which includes the Mittal family and has reportedly approached Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, to purchase a strategic minority stake in Liverpool Football Club. Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool's current owners, confirmed their interest, stating that Bhatia's group aims for a "strategic minority investment."
Reports from the Financial Times suggest that a deal with Bhatia's consortium would value Liverpool at more than $6 billion (£4.5 billion). While the exact stake is not confirmed, some reports indicate it could be up to 30 percent. This potential investment follows a similar deal in 2023 when FSG sold a minority stake to US private equity firm Dynasty Equity for between £82 million and £164 million ($110 million-$220 million), which helped offset debt and fund infrastructure projects like the redevelopments of Anfield's Main Stand and Anfield Road end, and the Kirkby training ground.
FSG, who bought Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million, had indicated in 2022 their openness to new investment, either from minority shareholders or a full sale. This current move by Bhatia, who recently transferred his ownership in QPR, suggests a desire for significant involvement beyond just capital, aiming to add commercial and operational value to the club. Liverpool is currently valued at £4.7 billion by Forbes, ranking as the fourth most valuable football club globally.
