Laura Loomer, a prominent pro-Trump influencer and provocateur with nearly 2 million social media followers, has dramatically altered her long-held views on the conflict in Ukraine following a recent visit to the country. For years, Loomer had been a vocal critic of U.S. aid to Ukraine, often echoing Russian narratives by calling Ukraine "a country full of Nazi apologists" and its leader, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a "jihadi apologist." However, during her "fact-finding tour," which included experiencing an air raid in Kyiv, witnessing evidence of Russian war crimes in Bucha, and meeting with Ukrainian officials including President Zelenskyy himself, Loomer declared that she had been "propagandized by Russian media." She confessed on X (formerly Twitter) that she had "believed many things about Ukraine, but now I see that most of them were either distorted or only partially true," and that she felt like an "a**hole for minimizing the struggle of Ukrainians for the last 5 years."
Loomer's change of heart was welcomed by Ukrainian officials, with Sergiy Kyslytsya, first deputy head of the office of the president, stating that it "takes courage to come to Ukraine and not be deterred by Russian propaganda or air raid sirens." Tetyana Berezhna, Ukraine's deputy prime minister for humanitarian policy, also thanked Loomer for visiting, emphasizing the importance of seeing the truth firsthand. Loomer's visit included tours of sites like Bucha, where she reported seeing mass graves and evidence of Russian atrocities against civilians and priests. She also claimed to have seen photos of Ukrainian POWs with swastikas engraved on their foreheads by Russians, which led her to question who the real "Nazis" were.
Her reversal is significant given her influence within former President Donald Trump's MAGA base, where skepticism about supporting Ukraine has been prevalent among figures like JD Vance and even Trump himself. Loomer expressed regret for her previous statements and indicated that she would not delete her past posts, opting instead to acknowledge that she was wrong. This shift highlights the potential impact of direct observation in counteracting misinformation, particularly for figures with a large platform. Loomer stated her initial motivation for the trip was to verify the Russian "propaganda" she had consumed and, finding it untrue, felt compelled to inform her followers.
