The Einstein Tower, located in Potsdam, Germany, was conceived around 1917 and built between 1919 and 1924, becoming operational in 1924. This astrophysical observatory, designed by architect Erich Mendelsohn, was intended to house a solar telescope for astronomer Erwin Finlay Freundlich to test Einstein's theory of relativity concerning the redshift of solar spectral lines. Despite never working there, Albert Einstein supported its construction and operation. The Tower is lauded as a rare example of the connection between science and art, with Mendelsohn successfully blending scientific requirements with his unique architectural vision. Initially, it was the most prominent research institution of its kind in Europe until World War II.
The original purpose of the Einstein Tower was to observe solar spectral lines to prove the redshift predicted by Einstein's theory of relativity. However, due to a lack of understanding of solar convection at the time, these initial observations remained inconclusive, as turbulence on the sun's surface produced a blue shift that superimposed and obscured the predicted effect. Experimental confirmation of the effect was not achieved until much later. The building, though designed for reinforced concrete, was largely constructed from stucco-covered brick, which was a departure from Mendelsohn's original intent.
The Einstein Tower remains a functional solar observatory today, operating as part of the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam. Light from the telescope is directed down through a shaft to a basement laboratory housing instruments. The facility has undergone significant renovations, including between 1997 and 1999, and more recently from 2021 to 2023, largely funded by the Wüstenrot Foundation. It reopened in September 2023 and continues to be important for educating young scientists and developing new spectro-polarimetric equipment for other large telescopes, complementing German solar telescopes in Tenerife.
