Joby Aviation and Vertical Aerospace are prominent players in the emerging electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft market. Joby recently announced a binding, multi-year agreement with Virgin Atlantic, making Virgin its exclusive UK airline partner for air taxi services. This collaboration will allow Virgin Atlantic customers to book Joby air taxi rides through the airline's app or website, with planned routes including an 8-minute journey between London Heathrow and Central London for an estimated $130-$160, and a 15-minute hop between Manchester Airport and Leeds. Joby's CEO, JoeBen Bevirt, reported the company is in stage five, the final stage, of certification with the FAA, and their S4 aircraft has successfully conducted test flights between JFK Airport and Manhattan.

Vertical Aerospace, a UK company, has also made a significant advancement by successfully demonstrating a full transition flight with its Valo prototype. This test showed the aircraft's ability to take off, cruise, and land vertically using its eight electric engines. While the production model isn't expected to carry passengers until 2029, the Valo's larger capacity for four to six passengers could give it an edge over rivals like Joby, which recently hit a $7.6 billion market cap. However, Vertical Aerospace faces a substantial financial challenge, needing to burn through $200 million within a year from a $100 million balance sheet and $100 million raised in March, representing a tenth of its former $2.2 billion valuation.

Executives from both Joby and Electra highlighted the massive market potential for air taxis, particularly for medium-distance trips between 50 and 250 miles. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an eVTOL pilot program with eight participants, including Joby and Electra, to gather data for safe commercial operations in real-world scenarios. A key challenge remains the establishment of new take-off and landing sites, or "vertiports," to maximize accessibility and value for commuters and other users, potentially transforming regional mobility by bringing air service closer to where people live and work.
