The U.S. Army is actively seeking proposals for a new, cheaper interceptor for its Patriot surface-to-air missile system, aiming for a unit cost under $1 million. This initiative is a significant departure from the current PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) interceptors, which cost approximately $5.3 million each, up from a historical average of about $4 million. The new interceptor is intended to supplement existing munitions, particularly against lower-tier threats like drones and cruise missiles, thereby improving the cost-per-intercept ratio.
The Army's target unit price of under $1 million is broken down into four component groups, each capped at $250,000: the Low-Cost Interceptor All-Up Round (AUR) and Fire Control, Low-Cost Rocket Motor, Low-Cost Seeker, and Fire Control and Flight Guidance Implementation. The service is also looking for a central integrator to combine these elements, which could come from various sources. This approach reflects a broader Pentagon effort to acquire lower-cost munitions and reduce reliance on single prime contractors, potentially by acquiring intellectual property and using contract manufacturing.
The push for a low-cost interceptor comes amid concerns over dwindling stockpiles and strained supply chains, exacerbated by the Patriot system's extensive use in conflicts in the Middle East and support for allies like Ukraine. A cheaper, potentially faster-to-produce alternative could alleviate these pressures. While existing PAC-3 MSE interceptors are highly effective against a range of threats including ballistic missiles, their high cost makes them less economical for engaging less sophisticated targets such as kamikaze drones. The new interceptor would allow for more efficient use of the Patriot system against a wider array of threats, including Air Breathing Threats (ABT), Cruise Missiles, Close-Range Ballistic Missiles (CRBM), and Short-Range Ballistic Missiles (SRBM).
