Claude Code, an AI coding agent developed by Anthropic, has emerged as a groundbreaking success, achieving an annualized revenue run rate exceeding $2.5 billion, positioning it for one of the largest IPOs in history. Initially a side project by Boris Cherny, the tool quickly gained internal traction at Anthropic before its public release a year ago. It has since become a dominant force in the AI coding market, outperforming competitors like Microsoft Copilot and Cursor in developer satisfaction surveys, despite their earlier entry into the market. This rapid financial growth is described by multiple analysts as the fastest $1 billion ramp in enterprise software history, based on run-rate revenue.
Anthropic's Series G announcement confirmed this financial success, alongside a $30 billion funding round at a $380 billion valuation. By February 2026, SemiAnalysis estimated Claude Code was responsible for approximately 4% of all public GitHub commits, translating to roughly 135,000 commits per day, with projections to exceed 20% by the end of 2026. The initial development team, consisting of only nine engineers, was able to produce nearly 90% of Claude Code's own codebase using the tool itself, highlighting its efficiency and capabilities.
Despite its success, Claude Code has faced security challenges. In March 2026, Anthropic inadvertently published 512,000 lines of Claude Code's TypeScript source code due to a misconfigured debug file. Moreover, Microsoft Security researchers documented a prompt injection vulnerability in the Claude Code GitHub Action in June 2026, which could expose sensitive CI/CD pipeline secrets. Anthropic addressed this vulnerability in May 2026. Furthermore, a developer discovered in July 2026 that Claude Code versions 2.1.9-2.1.196 contained a silent monitoring mechanism, later confirmed by Anthropic to detect unauthorized usage, particularly from Chinese AI labs.
