Anglian Water Services CEO Peter Simpson received a substantial £1.3 million pay package, which included a £337,651 bonus. This occurred despite the company's two-star pollution rating from the Environment Agency, indicating it required significant improvement. His overall package, though reduced by 37% from $2.1 million the previous year, still drew criticism from pay campaigners who argued the curbs were insufficient.
Simpson's base salary increased to $531,365 in 2021-22, up from $505,277 a year prior. Chief Financial Officer Steve Buck also received a $919,253 pay package, including a $228,243 bonus. The maximum bonuses for both Simpson and Buck were cut by 45% due to missed customer delivery targets related to pollution and flooding goals.
Anglian Water has since issued statements acknowledging the need for financial reward to be linked to company performance. They stated that for the 2024/25 year, a new CEO, Mark Thurston, and CFO would not receive bonuses due to performance, even with a 36% improvement in serious pollutions. The company emphasizes the importance of attracting and retaining talent, expressing concern that blanket prohibitions on bonuses could hinder this.
