Health officials are investigating a cyclospora outbreak that has led to a significant number of illnesses, especially in Michigan where more than 3,300 cases have been reported. Early information from over 1,000 patient interviews in Michigan points to lettuce or salad greens as a common product associated with the outbreak. Other states affected include Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky, with at least 400 cases across these four states appearing epidemiologically linked to a common source.
Taco Bell has proactively removed limited ingredients at select restaurants as a precautionary measure, although public health officials have not confirmed a direct link to the chain or any specific ingredient, supplier, or retailer. Taco Bell is monitoring the situation and following guidance from public health authorities. Despite this, some Detroit-area Taco Bell locations have stopped serving lettuce and cilantro amidst the rising cases.
Consumers are advised to take precautions, such as buying whole heads of lettuce, discarding outer layers, and thoroughly washing produce, as well as avoiding bagged and pre-mixed salads. Cooking produce is considered the safest option to kill the parasite. The FDA and CDC, in partnership with state and local health officials, are actively investigating to identify the source of the outbreak.
