Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) announced it will launch a paid service called "Truth API" on August 1, offering financial news organizations and high-frequency trading firms real-time access to posts from the top 10 trending accounts on Truth Social. This move aims to monetize the platform's data, particularly given that posts from figures like Donald Trump often move markets. Interim CEO Kevin McGurn stated that the licensed API will be significantly faster than current scraping methods, which have often violated Truth Social's terms of service.

The initial rollout of Truth API will focus on the most influential accounts, including specific policymakers and public figures such as Donald Trump (@realDonaldTrump), the White House (@WhiteHouse), FBI Director Kash Patel (@Kash), and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (@seckennedy). McGurn indicated that future expansions could include more accounts for customers willing to pay higher fees. Several customers, including financial news organizations and trading firms, have already signed up ahead of the August 1 launch, though TMTG has not disclosed specific pricing.

This initiative marks TMTG's first foray into data licensing and is positioned as a key opportunity for recurring revenue. The company also intends to explore licensing Truth Social data to AI companies for large language model training, following a path similar to X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit. TMTG, which went public in March 2024, has faced financial challenges, reporting a net loss of $712 million last year, primarily due to accounting charges related to cryptocurrency investments, and a $406 million net loss in Q1 2026. Its shares have dropped 84% since going public.

Critics highlight potential conflicts of interest, especially since Donald Trump's family is the largest shareholder in TMTG, and Trump often uses Truth Social for official communications. Ethics attorney Virginia Canter from Democracy Defenders Fund called this a "huge conflict of interest," noting that Truth Social has become a "de facto presidential press room." TMTG maintains that this service is a logical step given that markets already react to Truth Social posts, and it seeks to provide an official, faster alternative to unofficial data scraping.

Beyond Truth API, McGurn views licensing as crucial for TMTG's broader business strategy which includes expanding beyond social media into areas like cryptocurrency, streaming via Truth+, and a proposed $6 billion merger with fusion-energy company TAE Technologies. Last year, TMTG generated $3.68 million in revenue from advertising and subscriptions, indicating the company's current business is small compared to major tech and media firms.
