Warren Buffett has announced a significant shift in his charitable giving, excluding the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation from his annual donations. Instead, he will direct approximately $6 billion to four foundations managed by his own family, thereby ending a "lifetime pledge" of annual gifts to the Gates Foundation. This decision comes after disclosures regarding Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates’s connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The Wall Street Journal reported that Buffett had been holding back his scheduled donation pending a law firm's review of the Gates Foundation's ties to Epstein.
Buffett has also accelerated his philanthropic timeline, stating his intention to donate all of his remaining Berkshire Hathaway stock, valued at more than $140 billion, to charity by December 31, 2034. This new plan replaces his previous arrangement, which stipulated that his three children would distribute his remaining fortune within 10 years of his death. The four family foundations are the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, the Sherwood Foundation (run by Susie Buffett), the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and Peter Buffett's NoVo Foundation. The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation will receive 9 million Class B shares, worth around $4.5 billion, while the other three will each get 1 million Class B shares, valued at just under $500 million each.
Over the past two decades, Buffett's donations to the Gates Foundation totaled nearly $48 billion. The Gates Foundation expressed gratitude for his decades of support, stating that his gifts have significantly aided their mission and that they remain financially strong to continue their work through 2045, supported by Bill Gates's $200 billion commitment. Cracks in the personal friendship between Buffett and Bill Gates reportedly emerged in 2021 when Buffett resigned as a trustee of the Gates Foundation, two months after Bill and Melinda Gates announced their divorce. Buffett has indicated that he has not spoken to Gates since the issue of Epstein ties became public and that he would wait to see how the situation unfolded before making further decisions about donations to the Gates Foundation.
