Investment in the commercial fusion sector has reached at least $1.6 billion in disclosed funding, financing, and public market transactions in 2026. This significant capital flow signals a strategic shift, with investors and governments now focusing on the industrial build-out required for commercial fusion, even though widespread power generation is still years away. The market is increasingly driven by the anticipation of a massive supply chain, encompassing areas like superconducting magnets, high-temperature superconductors, specialist steels, and tritium handling systems.
Consultancy Helixos estimates that annual construction spending on commercial fusion plants could surge to $73.1 billion by 2040. This figure is more than triple the projected $20 billion in annual electricity revenue from these plants at that time, highlighting that the near-term financial opportunity lies in manufacturing and construction rather than immediate electricity sales. The shift is partially driven by growing energy demands from AI data centers, electrification, and industrial reshoring, pushing investors to back fusion as a potential source of secure, low-carbon baseload electricity.
The investment landscape for fusion continues to expand, building on $2.64 billion raised in the 12 months leading up to July 2025, bringing total private fusion funding among surveyed companies to nearly $9.8 billion. Major financing rounds include Helion Energy, which secured $465 million in June 2026 at a $15.5 billion valuation, and Thea Energy, which raised $100 million in May. Japan's Fujikura is investing $72 million to boost production of superconducting magnet materials, and Commonwealth Fusion Systems, with close to $3 billion in total funding, is progressing with its SPARC demonstration machine and first ARC power plant.
Despite the influx of capital, developers still face significant challenges, including proving sustained reactions, protecting reactor components, handling fuel, securing permits, and ensuring commercial viability at scale. The Fusion Industry Association (FIA) reported a 24% increase in supply chain spending in 2025, with a projected 27% jump to $681 million in 2026. While the FIA notes improved cooperation between fusion companies and suppliers, bottlenecks persist in power systems (48%), heat management technologies (44%), and vacuum vessels (32%), along with long-term concerns about materials for extreme conditions and fusion fuel cycle systems (48%).
