Deutsche Bank strategist George Saravelos indicates that the British pound has been surprisingly resilient, buoyed by recent rhetoric from Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham. This contrasts with initial market anxieties that a potential Burnham premiership would lead to a leftward policy shift, increasing government spending and borrowing, and weakening fiscal discipline.
While previous reports highlighted Burnham's historical criticisms of bond markets and proposals for increased defense spending outside fiscal rules, Saravelos notes an apparent change in his tone. This shift has somewhat allayed investor fears that a Burnham-led government would dismantle the current framework of fiscal restraint, contributing to the pound's unexpected strength.
However, this positive assessment by Saravelos stands against a backdrop of significant market turmoil initially triggered by the prospect of Burnham's return to UK Parliament. The pound had previously fallen to a near one-month low of $1.3356, and 10-year gilt yields rose to 5.137%, reflecting widespread investor concern over political uncertainty and potential macroeconomic risks under a Burnham leadership.
