President Donald Trump announced the cessation of a ceasefire agreement with Iran, labeling the Iranian leadership as "scum" and "cuckoo" following recent exchanges of fire. Speaking at a NATO summit in Turkey, Trump stated the US "hit them very hard last night" and indicated the US would "probably hit them hard again tonight." He accused Tehran of breaching an interim deal signed by both countries in June, which aimed for a conflict resolution, the safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, and the lifting of US sanctions on Iran.
The initial strikes by US Central Command (Centcom) occurred in response to attacks on three tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media reported that eight Iranian army members were killed in US strikes in Bandar Abbas and Bushehr. Oil prices saw a significant jump after Trump's comments, although they remain below the peak levels observed during a full closure of the strait. The US also re-imposed sanctions on Iranian oil sales by revoking a temporary suspension.
In retaliation, Iran reported targeting US military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait on Wednesday. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded to Trump's rhetoric, stating, "We do not answer vulgarity with vulgarity, but with action: fearlessly and with great valour." The exchanges on Tuesday night and Wednesday marked the most severe clashes between the US and Iran since the memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on June 17.
Trump emphasized the US would impose a naval blockade on Iran and charge a 20% tariff on all cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reaffirmed that bombs would be "dropping on key facilities in Iran," following Trump's warning that the US would hit Iran "hard." US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed launching strikes against "multiple targets" in Iran, asserting these actions were in response to "Iran's unwarranted and continued aggression" and aimed at degrading Iran's ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran, in a post on X, declared that Iran "will stand firm against any pressure or threat." Trump also suggested potential targets could include Kharg Island, a crucial oil facility in the Strait of Hormuz, bridges, power plants, and desalination facilities, while denying that such strikes would lead to a full-scale war. Neil Quilliam, an energy policy specialist, noted that Iran's actions indicate its resolve to maintain control over Hormuz, a key leverage point, even at the risk of escalating tensions with the US.
