Dyson has launched its first portable fan, the HushJet Mini Cool, aiming to provide a more powerful and well-designed alternative to cheaper handheld fans. Priced at $99.99, it is more affordable than the $149.99 Shark ChillPill, a competing premium portable fan. The device boasts a sleek, minimalist design, making it easy to carry, and comes with accessories. Its core appeal lies in its impressive power, capable of producing strong gusts of air. It features five standard airflow speed settings and a Boost mode, which reviewers indicate can feel like a handheld jet engine, with airflow speeds possibly reaching up to 80 feet per second or 55 mph.
A significant drawback, however, is its noise. Despite the "HushJet" branding emphasizing quiet engineering and lowered frequencies, reviewers consistently note that the fan is loud, even at its lowest setting. The noise has been compared to a conspicuous motorized whir, a vrooming sound with a high-pitched tone like a dog whistle, or even a vacuum cleaner or hair dryer. On higher settings, it produces a sound that some found distracting, even during Zoom meetings. Some measured its noise output at 45 dBA from 50 cm away on the lowest setting and up to 68 dBA in Boost mode at the same distance, making it significantly louder than other portable fans at full power.
The HushJet Mini Cool is powered by a 5,000 mAh battery, charging via USB-C. In tests, it lasted six hours and 29 minutes on the lowest speed setting, slightly exceeding Dyson's advertised six hours. At the highest non-Boost setting, it operated for 50 minutes. While its compact cylindrical design (38mm in diameter) and weight of 208 grams (similar to an iPhone 17 Pro) make it highly portable, its powerful performance comes at the cost of being noticeable in quieter environments. Reviewers suggest that while its cooling ability is undeniable, its noise levels may deter many users, especially given its premium price point compared to much cheaper, albeit less powerful, alternatives.
