Citigroup Inc. strategists, under the leadership of Beata Manthey, have double-downgraded their rating on UK equities, moving them from an "overweight" position to "underweight." This decision marks a reversal from just a few months prior when they had upgraded UK stocks to "overweight" in March, citing their defensive qualities amidst geopolitical turmoil triggered by the Iran War.

The rationale behind the current downgrade centers on a perceived shift in the market environment. Manthey's team notes that the geopolitical tailwinds that previously supported commodity-heavy and defensive UK stocks are now diminishing. Instead, they anticipate a more favorable outlook for cyclical assets, which typically perform better in periods of economic growth and stability.

This change in sentiment suggests that the factors that made UK stocks an attractive "geopolitical hedge" are no longer as prominent. The initial upgrade in March highlighted the UK market's strong exposure to commodities and defensive sectors, which provided insulation against rising oil prices at the time. However, the current assessment indicates a move towards assets with greater sensitivity to economic cycles, implying a more optimistic global economic outlook by Citigroup.
