Tech companies are increasingly investing in architectural redesigns for data centers to combat growing community opposition, with some facilities now resembling modern art museums more than industrial warehouses. This shift comes as data centers face significant backlash over their traditional "ugly" appearance, as well as concerns about energy consumption, water usage, and noise pollution.

Gensler, a major design firm, has seen its data center practice grow substantially, with a 40% increase in employees working on such projects in the last year and revenue tripling to $127 million since 2023. Examples of these new designs include a data center in the Netherlands with vertical gardens, a Phoenix facility featuring a rust-orange facade and a two-acre community park, and planned facilities in Alberta, Canada, with wood-colored exteriors to blend into natural landscapes.

The push for aesthetic improvements is driven by municipalities making demands on appearance, increased public scrutiny, and more stringent approval processes, according to industry experts like Jackson Metcalf of Gensler and Neil Sheehan of Woolpert. While architectural enhancements represent a relatively low cost compared to other data center expenses, some developers are cautious about appearing to waste money on "fancier" structures, fearing negative investor perception. However, the costs associated with fighting lawsuits and relocating facilities due to community opposition often outweigh the investment in improved design and community engagement.

Despite these efforts, there's concern that simply making data centers look "prettier" won't fully address the more serious issues of energy and water demands. Local opposition groups are rapidly growing, with DataCenterOpposition.com reporting 430 groups now, up from 76 at the end of 2025, representing over 525,000 members. These groups have successfully delayed or blocked projects, with estimates suggesting $130 billion in projects were impacted in Q1 2026 alone. This underscores that while design helps, developers must also proactively tackle resource consumption and community impact to ensure project viability.

Leaders at companies like Microsoft and Oracle acknowledge that the industry can no longer dismiss local concerns as mere "NIMBYism." "Community acceptance" has emerged as a critical factor in site selection, alongside power availability, land, water, and connectivity. Project delays due to community issues are becoming more common, with some forecasts suggesting more than half of planned U.S. data center projects for 2026 could face setbacks related to permitting, zoning, or public opposition.
