Tensions between the US and Iran have sharply escalated after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz "until further notice" following a series of US airstrikes. This latest development comes after an Iranian strike on a Cyprus-flagged container ship in the Strait, which caused significant engine room damage and left a civilian crew member missing. All crew members, including the missing one, were Indian nationals. The US responded with its third round of airstrikes in a week, targeting approximately 140 sites in Iran, including missile and drone launch sites, ammunition dumps, and communication equipment.
Iran's decision to close the Strait of Hormuz is a direct response to the US military actions and its claims of US interference in the region. The US, in turn, is demanding that Iran publicly commit to stopping attacks on ships and ensure all shipping lanes in the Strait remain open without tolls. Previously, about one-fifth of all traded oil and natural gas passed through the Strait, and its closure during the ongoing conflict had already led to a global energy crisis, although oil prices have since dropped from wartime highs of $120 a barrel.
Countries in the Gulf region, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman, have also been affected, with Iran retaliating against nations hosting US military forces. Qatar reported intercepting incoming Iranian fire, with three people, including a child, wounded by shrapnel. Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard stated that vessels that disregarded warnings and used unapproved routes were subject to "warning shots" and being brought to a stop. The UK Maritime Trade Operations center noted that ships had been using a route hugging Oman's shoreline to avoid Iranian territorial waters.
US President Donald Trump had previously suggested an interim deal in the Iran war was "over," though mediators like Pakistan, Qatar, and Egypt continue peace efforts. Despite Iran's claims of closure, the Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC), overseen by the US Navy, maintains that the critical waterway remains open, though it has labeled the security threat level as "severe." Analysts caution that the conflict risks escalating into a wider regional war, with the potential interruption of the Strait's oil transit having a catastrophic global economic impact.
Iranian Health Ministry spokesperson Hossein Kermanpour reported that the two previous rounds of US strikes killed at least 17 people and wounded 115 others. The US Central Command clarified that the latest strikes were aimed at weakening Iran's ability to threaten civilian shipping. India has condemned the attack on the container ship and is working with Oman on search-and-rescue, urging for free and unimpeded navigation through the Strait.
