The GFS Galaxy incident left one civilian crew member missing and the ship disabled due to an onboard fire and severe engine room damage. The UKMTO reported the crew abandoned ship into a lifeboat. Iran's actions led to a surge in global energy prices, as roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply typically transits through the Strait of Hormuz. Following the US strikes, Iran claimed to have attacked a second vessel in the strait and launched ballistic missiles at US military bases in Oman, Kuwait, and Jordan, including Al Udeid air base in Qatar, alleging destruction of command and control centers and other facilities.
This escalation followed a breakdown of a fragile ceasefire declared "over" by US President Donald Trump. While oil prices had been declining for two months, Brent crude surged past $80 a barrel to a two-week high before settling below $78. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned that renewed conflict in the region could drive up inflation, disrupt supply chains, and negatively impact financial markets. Negotiations to solidify an interim deal to end the war, mediated partly by Oman, are complicated by the ongoing instability and Iran's continued actions in the Strait.
