Recent fresh strikes have been exchanged between the US and Iran, with Iran attacking a US military base in Kuwait after the US struck Iranian radar and command and control sites in Goruk and Qeshm Island. The US Central Command stated its strikes were in response to Iranian actions, including the shooting down of a drone over international waters, and also eliminated Iranian air defenses and two one-way attack drones.
These exchanges are occurring as negotiations between Tehran and Washington to formalize a ceasefire, initially brokered in early April, remain elusive. Oil prices reacted to these developments, with Brent crude rising 3.2% to $94 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate increasing 3.6% to $90.50 a barrel.
Both sides have been reviewing a potential deal where Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, commit to not building nuclear weapons, and begin negotiations on its nuclear program. In return, the US would offer phased sanctions relief and ease its naval blockade on Iran. US President Donald Trump has indicated that Iran is keen on a deal, though he faces pressure from within his own party and concerns about rising fuel prices.
The broader regional tensions are exacerbated by ongoing Israeli military operations against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have ordered attacks on Beirut's southern suburbs, leading to mass evacuations as ground troops push deeper into the country. Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, considers the ceasefire in Lebanon an integral part of any agreement to end the conflict.
