Meta is reportedly developing next-generation smart glasses with "super-sensing" vision, enabling real-time recognition of people, objects, and environments. These AI-powered smart glasses, under development with codenames "Aperol" and "Bellini," could identify individuals by name through facial recognition and activate context-aware reminders, such as prompting users to grab their keys or pick up groceries when near a store. This technology is expected to be supported by Meta's Visual Intelligence AI system.
To facilitate these advanced features, the glasses would require continuous activation of their onboard cameras and sensors. Meta has begun testing this capability on its current-generation Ray-Ban smart glasses, but significant battery drain has been a major challenge. Consequently, Meta is likely aiming to integrate this feature into future models that offer improved power efficiency.
Further enhancements for upcoming Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses include a small display integrated into the lower section of the right lens for a heads-up augmented reality (AR) experience, allowing users to view notifications, run lightweight apps, and see images directly in their line of sight. Input mechanisms are expected to include touch controls on the temple and a wrist-worn controller, similar to the one demonstrated with Meta's Orion AR prototype glasses.
In addition to the Ray-Ban partnership, Meta is also collaborating with Oakley, another brand under EssilorLuxottica, to develop a new line of smart glasses. This expansion indicates Meta's commitment to the smart glasses market, which it sees as a crucial hardware category for the AI era. The company launched new Meta Glasses starting at $299, powered by Meta AI with Muse Spark, offering features like enhanced multimodal capabilities, improved understanding of visual cues, and over 8 hours of battery life with a charging case providing an additional 40 hours.
