Maersk, a major Danish container shipping group, announced on Sunday that it is temporarily suspending all future Trans-Suez sailings through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. This decision was made in response to the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East following an escalating military conflict, including US and Israeli strikes on Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
The suspension comes after Maersk had only last month begun a gradual return of some services to the Suez route, an important step towards alleviating two years of global trade disruption caused by attacks on ships in the Red Sea by Yemen's Houthi rebels. The company emphasized that it will continuously monitor the situation and will prioritize the Trans-Suez route once security conditions permit.
Alongside Maersk, other significant shipping companies are also rerouting. German shipping group Hapag-Lloyd is redirecting its IMX container shipping service around southern Africa, and French shipping group CMA CGM has instructed its vessels in and around the Gulf to seek shelter and is suspending sailings through the Suez Canal. Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has suspended all cargo bookings to the Middle East until further notice and instructed its vessels in the Gulf region to seek safe shelter areas.
