Rogers Communications has finalized its acquisition of the remaining 25% stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) from Larry Tanenbaum's Kilmer Sports for $3.1 billion. This move grants Rogers full ownership of MLSE, which includes prominent sports teams such as the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs, the NBA's Toronto Raptors, and MLS's Toronto FC. This acquisition follows Rogers' earlier purchase of BCE's 37.5% stake in MLSE for CA$4.7 billion ($3.45 billion), bringing its total ownership to 75% prior to this latest deal.
With this latest transaction, Rogers now commands an unrivaled portfolio of Canadian sports assets. Its holdings encompass MLSE's teams, the MLB's Toronto Blue Jays, Canada's largest sports media brand Sportsnet, and venues like Rogers Centre and Scotiabank Arena. Analysts at TD Securities estimate that Rogers' sports empire could be valued at up to C$25 billion ($18 billion).
This consolidation of sports assets positions Rogers as one of the world's most valuable sports conglomerates, alongside entities like Kroenke Sports & Entertainment and Fenway Sports Group. Rogers CEO Tony Staffieri has indicated that the company plans to monetize some of these assets through a minority sale or private equity infusion, aiming to unlock more value for shareholders. Canaccord Genuity equity analyst Aravinda Galappatthige noted that Rogers' stock price doesn't fully reflect the value of its MLSE ownership, suggesting a high likelihood of a transaction involving a sale of a minority interest in Rogers' SportsCo within six to twelve months.
