South African companies are increasingly investing in renewable energy solutions to counter the nation's unreliable power grid and escalating electricity costs. This surge in private renewable energy deployment is leading to a projected record year for investment in 2026, with an anticipated 1,787 MW already at financial close and a further 3,575 MW on track by December. This represents more than five times the average capacity financed in pre-2023 years, indicating a significant shift in the country's energy landscape.
Key players like Sasol, a global chemicals and energy company, are making substantial moves away from Eskom's coal power. Sasol has announced its intent to secure up to 2 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030, with over 500 MW already integrated and another 700 MW under construction. A significant part of this strategy involves a power purchase agreement with Enel Green Power RSA, wheeling 330 MW from the Impofu Wind Cluster to its Secunda site. This demonstrates a growing trend of large industrial users leveraging "wheeling" frameworks, where electricity generated from independent renewable sources is transmitted over the national grid to their facilities.
Mining firm Sibanye-Stillwater has also committed to a 10-year power purchase agreement with Etana Energy, aiming to supply 600 GWh (equivalent to about 220 MW) of renewable electricity annually to its South African operations starting in late 2027. This initiative, combined with its own 89 MW Castle Wind Farm, will cover over 35% of the company's targeted renewable energy capacity. Similarly, Tiger Brands is partnering with Apollo Africa for an electricity wheeling agreement starting in 2028, aiming to source approximately 60% of its Gauteng factories' electricity from renewables. African Rainbow Energy has further solidified its position in the market by acquiring a majority stake in SOLA Group in a $1.2 billion deal, bringing its combined renewable energy portfolio to nearly 2,000 MW, supplying major corporations like Amazon, Sasol, and Vodacom.
Despite the significant progress in private renewable energy generation, a major challenge remains the transmission bottleneck. While 31.7 GW of generation customer connections are at or beyond the budget quotation phase, the grid's capacity to transmit this power from remote generation sites (like the Northern Cape for solar and the Eastern/Western Cape for wind) to major demand centers is lagging. Analysts caution that a supply crunch could emerge between 2029 and 2030 if grid expansion does not accelerate to match the pace of generation investment.
