This intervention preceded FIFA's announcement that Balogun's automatic one-game suspension would be lifted, allowing him to play in the subsequent match against Belgium.
FIFA's decision, announced on Sunday, relied on Article 27 of its disciplinary committee rules, which permits the suspension of disciplinary measures for a probationary period. Balogun's suspension was deferred for one year, meaning it would be reinstated alongside any new penalties if he committed another similar infringement within that period. This move marked a significant departure from typical World Cup procedures, as it was reportedly the first time since 1962 that a red card during the tournament did not result in a suspension.
The decision drew praise from Trump, who stated, "Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!" However, it sparked outrage from the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) and Belgium coach Rudi Garcia, who expressed astonishment and questioned FIFA's integrity. The RBFA indicated it was investigating all potential options to protect the principles of fair play. U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino, on the other hand, applauded FIFA's action.
