After days of extreme heat, a dangerous pattern of thunderstorms is expected to move across the eastern United States, potentially impacting July 4th fireworks and outdoor gatherings. The storms are fueled by a strong heat dome that has lingered over the region, and some could bring damaging wind gusts of 60 mph or more, particularly in the Mid-Atlantic and Central Plains, with a heightened risk for the DC, Baltimore, and Arlington, Virginia areas, as well as portions of Oklahoma and Kansas.

This shift in weather follows an intense heat wave that saw temperatures in the 90s and low 100s from New England to the Southeast. Major cities like Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., experienced triple-digit temperatures for three consecutive days, with at least 22 locations breaking or tying daily temperature records. The extreme heat has already led to event cancellations, such as the July 4 parade in Washington, D.C., and other celebrations in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, with one reported death in Bethel Township, Pennsylvania, attributed to a heart attack due to heat exhaustion.

The severe weather threat is expected to persist through the holiday weekend, with a Level 3 out of 5 severe storm threat issued for Washington, D.C. and surrounding areas. The atmosphere, heavily laden with moisture, will continue to fuel thunderstorm development. In addition to damaging winds and lightning, there is a risk of localized flash flooding from slow-moving storm cells, which could further disrupt travel and outdoor activities. The air quality, already poor due to the heat dome, could also be impacted by these storms.

While the thunderstorms are hit-or-miss rather than a widespread line, any area affected could see disruptions to fireworks displays and other festivities. The Fourth of July fireworks display in Washington, D.C., which is planned to be the "largest fireworks show in history" with approximately 850,000 fireworks, could be particularly vulnerable. Climate change, driven by fossil fuel pollution, has been identified by the World Weather Attribution as making this familiar summer weather pattern far more dangerous, with the intensity and humidity of this week's heat having been "virtually impossible" without its effects.
