Crédit Agricole has announced its increased ownership in Banco BPM, now holding 29.3% of the Italian bank's share capital. This move, achieved through a combination of market purchases and a derivative instrument, signifies Crédit Agricole's deeper commitment to the Italian market, where it has maintained a long-standing presence.

The French banking group views this increased stake as consistent with its strategy of being a long-term investor and partner in Banco BPM's development. It further enhances existing industrial partnerships in consumer finance, non-life insurance, personal protection, and creditor protection insurance, reflecting Crédit Agricole's appreciation for Banco BPM's strong business franchise and positive financial prospects.

This additional stake is projected to impact Crédit Agricole's CET 1 ratio by approximately -35 basis points as of the end of Q2 2026. The increase to near 30% was anticipated, with Credit Agricole having previously informed Italian authorities of its intent to raise its holding. This positions Crédit Agricole strategically amidst a new wave of consolidation within the Italian banking sector.
