Eaton compares the situation to Joseph Stalin's purges of Soviet forces in the 1940s, noting that while no one is being killed, the removal of top officers from positions of authority has a similar impact, creating doubt within the armed forces. He warns that this effort to bend the military to the president's will is unprecedented in recent history and could have dire long-term consequences for the reputation and efficiency of the world's most powerful fighting force.
Eaton states that there is an active effort to politicize the armed forces, and once infected, the cure will be difficult and painful for future presidents. He emphasizes that the actions of Trump and Hegseth risk the military's standing as an independent entity, free from party politics. The Pentagon purge, which began soon after Hegseth's appointment, sent a clear message to "toe the line, or we will fire you." High-ranking officers, including the military inspector general, top military lawyers, and Charles Brown, then-chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, were dismissed. Lt. Gen. Dan Caine replaced Brown, with Trump claiming Caine expressed loyalty to him (which Caine denied). Eaton highlights that Hegseth swears fealty to Trump, while the military swears an oath to the Constitution, further underscoring the politicization.
The dismissals have sowed doubt throughout the ranks, questioning whether senior officers will comply with Trump's and Hegseth's directives or uphold established military rules. Eaton's major concern is that violations of the rules of war, already arguably committed by the Pentagon outside the US, could soon occur domestically. He points to the federalization of National Guard troops and their deployment into numerous cities against the wishes of Democratic mayors and state governors, and envisions a future where "a dramatic clash of forces might take place, with the federalized national guard facing off against state and local police." He warns that a "memorable event" is likely to occur, potentially leading to escalation and people getting hurt due to orders they believe are illegal.
