ALDI, the discount grocer, has opened its first Midtown Manhattan store on June 19, 2026, at 311 West 42nd Street, within The Ellery building, near Times Square. This new 25,000-square-foot flagship store is designed to bring ALDI's low-cost grocery model to one of the most densely populated urban markets, providing an affordable alternative to Midtown's typically high grocery prices. Chris Daniels, regional vice president for ALDI, highlighted that the store aims to demonstrate why many already choose ALDI for their weekly shopping, especially as consumers look to stretch their dollars further. The store will operate daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

ALDI's strategy for dramatically lowering food costs revolves around several operational efficiencies. The store stocks a curated selection of approximately 2,000 core SKUs, with about 4,000 total product variations, significantly fewer than traditional supermarkets that carry 40,000 to 50,000 items. Nearly 90% of the products are ALDI-exclusive brands, with one in three being award-winning. This focus on private labels and a streamlined inventory leads to faster turnover and lower warehousing costs. The store also utilizes a case-ready stocking system, where products are displayed directly from shipping cartons, allowing for quick and efficient shelf stocking with minimal labor. These methods contribute to potential savings of close to 40% compared to traditional grocery stores, which can translate to nearly $3,000 in annual savings for a family of four.

The Midtown Manhattan opening marks ALDI's continued expansion into urban markets, showcasing its ability to operate in locations impractical for larger competitors like Costco due to high real estate costs and limited space. The company aims to have 3,200 stores by the end of 2028, with this opening bringing them closer to that goal. To celebrate the grand opening, the first 200 customers received gift bags with ALDI products and a gift card, and limited-edition ALDI NYC tote bags were available. ALDI emphasizes fresh foods, with produce and ready-to-eat meals positioned prominently, including approximately 150 produce SKUs and a growing assortment of organic options making up about 10% of its selection. For example, in New York, avocados are a top-selling item, followed by eggs and Roma tomatoes, demonstrating ALDI's responsiveness to local demand.
