Former CIA Director John Brennan filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration to obtain records concerning investigations into him. This legal action comes amid ongoing scrutiny from the Trump administration related to the 2017 intelligence community assessment on Russian interference in the 2016 election. Brennan, a vocal critic of former President Trump, maintains that these investigations are politically motivated.
The lawsuit seeks documents that could shed light on the origins and scope of the inquiries into his role in the Russia investigation. This includes any official referral to the Justice Department from Trump allies, such as Republican Representative Jim Jordan, who in October referred Brennan to the DOJ for alleged false statements to Congress. Brennan's attorney previously stated in December that prosecutors informed Brennan he is a target of the investigation, which is reportedly being conducted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Miami.
The Justice Department has acknowledged "criminal investigations" into Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey. However, a lengthy investigation by former special counsel John Durham previously found no fault with Brennan regarding the intelligence community assessment. The legal challenges surrounding the investigation into Brennan highlight concerns among critics that the Trump administration is misusing prosecutorial power to target political adversaries and re-litigate past events, especially given that many core conclusions of the Russia investigation were affirmed by the Justice Department and a bipartisan Senate committee.
