JPMorgan Chase & Co. is reportedly at the forefront of orchestrating the sale of Idex, a French company specializing in district heating and cooling networks. The potential transaction could value Idex at more than $5 billion, including debt. This move by Idex's private equity owner, Antin Infrastructure Partners, highlights a growing trend among infrastructure investors to divest assets in district heating and cooling, which are increasingly seen as stable, long-term investments.
Antin, which acquired Idex in 2018, is exploring strategic options for the company after having significantly grown its operations and market presence. Idex operates a substantial portfolio of infrastructure, including France's largest cooling and heating network in the Paris-La Défense district. This network alone covers 3,500,000 square meters, providing 296 MW for two heating stations and 114 MW for a cooling station. Idex is also developing a 45 MW agropellet station, further expanding its renewable energy footprint.
Idex's robust financial performance under Antin's ownership is evident, with the company forecasting €2.14 billion in turnover for 2026 and planning a substantial €386 million in net capital expenditure for the same year, a 31% increase year-on-year. In 2025, Idex invested €296 million across various segments, including €92 million in heating and cooling networks and €33 million in solar PV installations. The company also secured €1.7 billion in refinancing through a sustainability-linked loan at the end of 2023, demonstrating strong lender confidence in its concession-based model. Recent contract wins, such as operating the Métropole network concession with €134 million in investment for renewable energy projects, underscore its growth trajectory. The Métropole project alone aims for 100% renewable sources, including 41% local biomass and 36% geothermal energy.
The sale process is drawing interest from a variety of potential buyers, including other private equity firms and infrastructure funds, all keen to capitalize on the predictable revenue streams and essential service nature of district energy assets. The heightened investor interest underscores the sector's appeal as a stable investment opportunity, particularly given the increasing focus on energy efficiency and decarbonization. JPMorgan's leadership in this process positions it to facilitate one of the larger deals in the European infrastructure market this year, reflecting the strong demand for high-quality, regulated assets that deliver consistent returns.
Idex's strategic importance is further underscored by its commitment to local energy transition and sustainable infrastructure development. The company’s vision is to convert local authorities' commitments into operational and future-ready infrastructure, with a mission to accelerate energy transition by promoting local, sustainable energy solutions. With a workforce of 1,500 employees, Idex not only delivers essential services but also contributes significantly to regional economic development and environmental goals, aiming to reduce 938,000 tonnes of emissions. The company's unique third-party financing model allows it to manage and build infrastructure without relying solely on public funds, making it an attractive target for investors seeking resilient and impactful ventures.
