British American Tobacco (BAT) is implementing a significant reduction in its global workforce, impacting 9,000 roles, which constitutes about 18% of its total employees. This measure is a key component of CEO Tadeu Marroco's strategy to streamline the organization and accelerate its transition towards becoming a "smoke-free business." The job cuts are anticipated to generate substantial cost savings, although the exact financial impact in dollar terms was not immediately disclosed, with a £600 million cost savings target by the end of 2028 already identified under its "Fit2Win" program.

The restructuring comes as BAT faces persistent challenges in its traditional cigarette business, including declining sales volume and increasing regulatory pressures worldwide.
