Rumors are circulating that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce might get married at Madison Square Garden, potentially costing up to $20 million. This echoes the famous 1974 wedding of musician Sly Stone and actress Kathy Silva, which also took place at MSG. Their televised ceremony was held before a Sly and the Family Stone concert, in front of approximately 21,000 to 23,000 concertgoers.
The Stone-Silva wedding was designed to be a grand spectacle. Halston designed elaborate gold outfits for the couple, and invitations requested guests to wear gold. While initial plans included doves and a flying "angel," some of the more ambitious elements were scaled back due to logistical and financial constraints, such as the Madison Square Garden’s demand for a $125,000 security bond for the flying act and for 200 extra security guards for a processional through the audience.
The event featured a star-studded guest list including Andy Warhol and Lance Loud. The reception at the Waldorf-Astoria’s Starlight Roof reportedly cost Columbia Records $25,000 for 400 guests. The ceremony itself, officiated by Bishop B. R. Stewart, saw Sly Stone and Kathy Silva exchange 59-cent filigreed wedding bands. While the wedding was a glamorous 1970s event, the marriage itself was short-lived, with the couple separating months later and divorcing two years after the ceremony.
