Recent scientific findings, particularly a large 2022 study published in Science Advances, challenge the popular notion that short-term mindfulness meditation, like an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course, significantly alters brain structure. This study, led by Tammi Kral at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, combined two randomized controlled trials with a total of 218 participants. Participants were assigned to MBSR, an active control group (exercise + nutrition), or a wait-list control. MRI scans taken before and after the intervention revealed no detectable structural brain changes in the MBSR group when compared to either control condition.
This larger, more rigorously controlled study contrasts sharply with earlier, smaller trials (e.g., a 2011 study with 16 participants) that reported grey-matter changes. Experts suggest several reasons for this discrepancy, including sample size (smaller samples can be noisier), the type of control group used (active controls remove general effects of structured activity and attention, unlike wait-list controls), and publication bias (positive findings are more likely to be published). The consensus among scientists is that while behavioral benefits like reduced anxiety, depressive symptoms, and stress reactivity are robustly replicated, claims about significant structural brain changes from short-course interventions are less defensible.
The structural changes related to meditation appear more consistently in long-term practitioners (years to decades of practice) when compared cross-sectionally against non-meditators, particularly in areas associated with attention and interoception. For specific applications like depression relapse prevention, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) has strong evidence and is a recommended option by organizations like NICE for adults with three or more previous depressive episodes. However, the idea that "eight weeks rewires your brain" is largely based on early, small studies and is not settled science.
