Calvin Butler, CEO of Exelon, the United States' largest utility company by customer count, has issued a severe warning regarding the nation's electrical grid. Speaking at the Fortune Brainstorm AI conference, Butler likened the grid's current state to a car with its 'check engine light' on, pushing towards inevitable malfunction. He emphasized that policymakers are ignoring these warning signs, and a supply crunch on extreme weather days could lead to significant public suffering, urging immediate action.
The core of the problem, according to Butler, is a growing disparity between skyrocketing demand—largely driven by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence and data centers—and a lack of financial incentives for independent power producers to construct new generation facilities. These producers are currently maximizing revenue from existing assets rather than investing in new capacity, a situation that risks both power shortfalls and escalating prices if current conditions persist.
Despite the industry's plan to invest $1.1 trillion over the next five years in infrastructure projects, including a new 765-kilovolt transmission line spanning 220 miles across Pennsylvania and West Virginia, Butler stressed that physical infrastructure alone is insufficient without a supportive policy framework. He highlighted the utility sector's critical role, powering 95% of the economy while representing only 5% of it, underscoring the urgency of addressing these issues. FERC Chairman Mark Christie has echoed similar concerns, noting that grid operators recently came "close to the edge" during extreme heat and that the U.S. is not building generation fast enough, particularly dispatchable resources.
Recent assessments by the North American Electric Reliability Corp (NERC) indicate that millions of Americans, about 104 million in total, across regions from the upper Midwest to the Gulf Coast and New England, face an elevated risk of power supply shortfalls this summer. This risk stems from aging grids, extreme weather, and the increasing reliance on intermittent renewable energy sources. While the Texas grid has seen some improvements with the addition of 7.5 gigawatts of battery storage, the overall situation points to a critical need for more robust and dispatchable power resources, potentially requiring mandatory reserve power supply targets.
