Lebanese Eurobonds, which had previously seen a substantial rally, experienced a decline in the week ending June 11, 2026. The BLOM Bond Index (BBI), tracking these Eurobonds, fell by 4.02% to 26.62 points. Despite this weekly decrease, the BBI still showed a year-to-date improvement of 10.53%. This recent dip was primarily attributed to the prolonged conflict in Southern Lebanon and renewed US strikes on Iran, driving bond prices down and consequently raising the weighted yield by 394 basis points to 61.90%.

The decline in bond performance contrasts with earlier optimism in January 2026, when Lebanese bonds rallied to their highest since March 2020. At that time, bonds across maturities reached about 28.4 cents on the dollar, up from 23.5 cents in December 2025 and significantly higher than the less than 6 cents in February 2024. This rally was fueled by hopes that a proposed law to free up bank deposits would positively impact the nation's financial troubles and signal progress towards an International Monetary Fund rescue.

However, the recent security environment in Lebanon has been fragile, with regional geopolitical tensions and the ongoing war between Hezbollah and Israel impacting the economy. Rising global energy prices and regional uncertainty have exacerbated inflationary risks and negatively affected market sentiment. These political and security concerns have sidelined financial and economic reform efforts that were previously prioritized, leading to renewed investor caution and a reversal of some of the earlier gains.

The initial bond rally between late September and early March had seen the defaulted dollar bonds of the Lebanese government return 229%, outperforming 67 other countries in a Bloomberg index. This was due to a political breakthrough that saw a functional government established and reform-friendly leaders appointed. However, this rally began to sour by mid-2025 as banking reforms stalled. Despite the earlier recovery, continuous regional conflicts and a lack of clear progress on debt restructuring have introduced significant uncertainty for investors regarding the recovery of their investments.
