Emerging-market equities recorded their most significant decline in approximately three weeks, primarily due to a widespread retreat in Asian technology heavyweights. This downturn was triggered by a disappointing outlook from Broadcom Inc., which fueled concerns regarding the momentum and scale of the artificial intelligence (AI) rally.
MSCI Inc.'s benchmark stocks gauge, which has a substantial weighting towards Asian markets, fell by 1.6% on Thursday. Within this broader decline, the information-technology subindex experienced an even sharper slump, dropping by as much as 3%.
This event follows a period where emerging market stocks had been performing strongly, even nearing record highs earlier in the month, partly on the back of tech gains. However, recent developments, including a hawkish Federal Reserve stance and a strong U.S. jobs report, have also put pressure on emerging market currencies, which saw a decline on June 5th after the U.S. jobs report undercutting the case for Fed rate cuts.
