SpaceX's recent IPO prospectus positions Starlink Mobile as a significant challenger in the wireless market, not just a service for remote areas. The company plans to offer next-generation direct-to-smartphone services that are "on par with terrestrial mobile networks" even in urban locations. This strategy involves upgraded satellites and utilizing spectrum acquired from EchoStar to vastly improve current services, which are limited to messaging and light voice and data.

The regulatory filing indicated that Starlink Mobile generated $632 million last year from its "mobile connectivity business," attributed to partnerships with over 30 mobile network operators across six continents. SpaceX anticipates offering more comprehensive satellite-to-mobile services, including broadband data and IoT connectivity, designed to deliver resilient, infrastructure-independent global connectivity and enable 5G. These enhanced services will rely on V2 Mobile satellites, with larger V3 satellites planned for deployment via Starship in 2027.

SpaceX estimates a total addressable market for Starlink Mobile at $740 billion, comparable to the $870 billion projected for Starlink Broadband. In the U.S., the company expects to provide "5G-like connectivity to a meaningful portion of existing unmodified devices" through its Starlink Mobile Gen2 service, either by leasing spectrum from partners or using its own domestic holdings. The global expansion of Starlink Mobile is contingent on securing MNO partnerships and country-by-country regulatory approvals.

Analysts view Starlink as a potential disruptor to American telecom giants like AT&T and Verizon. Oppenheimer, an investment bank, believes Starlink is evolving into a mainstream communications platform for residential, enterprise, government, and critical infrastructure segments. While Starlink's prices often exceed traditional broadband, its potential to alter how connectivity is delivered and profits are generated could reshape the American telecom industry. The FCC's approval of SpaceX's purchase of 65 megahertz of nationwide Direct-to-Device spectrum and a waiver increasing power limits further strengthen Starlink's position to become a standalone mobile operator, with a mobile network code already assigned since February 2024.
