Noel Tata recently announced his retirement as Chairman of Trent, a key retail arm of the Tata Group, during the company's 47th annual general meeting. His retirement aligns with Tata Group's governance policies, which set a non-executive director retirement age of 70, a milestone he will reach in November. Tata's departure concludes a nearly three-decade tenure during which he profoundly transformed Trent from a relatively modest retailer into one of India's most valuable consumer businesses, boasting substantial revenue growth and profitability. He initially joined the board in 1998 when his mother, Simone Tata, established the company following the divestment of Lakme.
Under Noel Tata's leadership, Trent experienced significant expansion. Revenue surged from $280 million (₹2,333 crore) in fiscal year 2014 to over $2.4 billion (₹20,000 crore) in fiscal year 2026. Profits also markedly improved, moving from a $2.3 million (₹19 crore) loss to a $177 million (₹1,477 crore) profit within the same period. The company's market capitalization grew from approximately $515 million (₹4,300 crore) to over $24 billion (₹2 lakh crore). Trent's retail footprint expanded to over 1,286 stores across 321 cities, covering 17.7 million square feet. Key to this growth were the successes of lifestyle and fashion department store chain Westside (300 stores) and the value-fashion chain Zudio (963 outlets, including 6 in the UAE), which became Trent's fastest-growing format.
Zudio, launched in 2016 as a private-label menswear chain, later expanded to womenswear, kidswear, and accessories. Its success in providing fashionable products at accessible prices tapped into India's growing middle-class consumer market and demonstrated Trent's ability to develop successful homegrown brands rather than relying on imported concepts. Noel Tata stated his belief that Trent is still in its early growth phase, having aimed for a tenfold increase in revenue, a goal he expressed confidence in achieving in the near future. The company plans to continue its expansion, investing in technology, AI integrations, supply chain logistics, and further store footprint enlargement.
In October 2024, Noel Tata also became the Chairman of Tata Trusts, which holds about 66% of Tata Sons, solidifying his influential position within the broader Tata ecosystem. Previously, as Managing Director of Tata International Limited from August 2010 to November 2021, he grew the company's turnover from $500 million to over $3 billion. He expressed ambitious plans to take Trent's homegrown brands like Westside and Zudio to international markets, aligning with India's objective of increasing value-added exports and aspiring to generate substantial revenues from overseas operations.
