Alpha-gal syndrome, a life-threatening allergy to red meat, is surging with over 100,000 cases in the U.S. over the past decade, according to Yale Climate Connections. This allergy is triggered by the bite of a lone star tick, which transfers a sugar molecule called alpha-gal into a person's bloodstream. The immune system then develops antibodies to this sugar, causing allergic reactions like hives, vomiting, and even anaphylaxis when the person subsequently consumes red meat containing alpha-gal.
Traditionally found in southern states, lone star ticks are now expanding their habitats northward, with increased prevalence in the Northeast United States, including Long Island. This expansion is attributed to warming climate conditions, as these ticks thrive in warmer areas. Researchers from NC State University note that the rise in cases is also linked to increasing tick and deer populations, as deer serve as a common host for ticks.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that as many as 450,000 Americans may have developed this allergy. Unlike other tick-borne illnesses, alpha-gal syndrome is not caused by bacteria or viruses but by an immune response to the alpha-gal sugar. Patients are typically advised to avoid meats from mammals like cows, pigs, and lambs, though some may consume dairy. In 2024, the FDA approved Xolair an injectable drug that helps reduce severe reactions from accidental exposure to meat, providing a new treatment option for those affected. The allergy can fade for some individuals if re-bites are avoided.
