Qualcomm is making significant strides in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, expanding beyond its traditional smartphone market into AI infrastructure. The company has secured a major chip agreement with ByteDance, strengthening its position in the data center market. Qualcomm's key advantage in AI is its energy efficiency, with new accelerator chips like the AI200 and AI250 designed for high performance with minimal power consumption, which is a crucial differentiator for data center operators. The company is also active in robotics, industrial automation, and drones, showcasing a broader AI footprint than many realize.

Despite Qualcomm's efforts, Nvidia remains a formidable competitor. Nvidia recently unveiled its RTX Spark superchip, which is poised to compete directly with Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips, particularly in Windows PCs. The RTX Spark, which will be used in high-end computers from Dell, HP, Microsoft, Lenovo, and Asus, boasts over 1,000 TOPS (1 petaflop) compared to Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite AI chip at 45 TOPS. Nvidia's entry into the PC CPU market with its ARM-based RTX Spark and N1X chips, developed with MediaTek, presents a direct challenge to Qualcomm's leadership in ARM-based Windows PCs. While Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips have facilitated an increase in ARM-powered PCs due to their power efficiency, Nvidia's integrated Blackwell RTX GPU and Grace CPU offer substantial processing power for AI tasks and graphics, potentially undermining Qualcomm's position. This intensifying rivalry led to a 7% decline in Qualcomm's stock following Nvidia's RTX Spark announcement, highlighting market concerns about Qualcomm's growth projections in the AI PC sector.

Qualcomm's investor day on June 24, 2026, will outline its diversified growth strategy, emphasizing AI-driven shifts across data centers, industrial AI, and personal AI, alongside its 6G roadmap. The company plans to leverage its low-power, high-performance silicon and connectivity expertise to target AI inference at the edge and in data centers, aiming to disrupt the dominance of Nvidia and Intel.
